How to Choose a Seoul Hotel for Your Itinerary

Skip the generic top-10 list. Put every candidate through three real situations: arriving with luggage, returning with shopping and getting back after the latest or wettest night of the trip.

Myeongdong, Hongdae, Jongno, Gangnam and cheaper outer areas serve different itineraries. A general “best hotel” ranking hides the repeated trips, luggage and companions that determine whether a location works for you.

Narrow the shortlist in sequence: keep two areas that match the trip, test each hotel against the hardest returns, then compare room and booking details. Pricing hotels before the area fits only adds noise.

The practical test is the route back after the day changes: a delayed arrival, rain, shopping bags or a late event. Choose the base that remains manageable under the conditions you expect to face.

Narrow areas before properties

  1. Count nights near Old Seoul, west Seoul and southern Seoul, then add your arrival time and fixed evening plans. The district that recurs most should lead the hotel shortlist.
  2. Myeongdong can suit days that spread in several directions; Hongdae fits repeated airport-rail and west-side plans; Jongno favors palace mornings; Gangnam is more relevant when fixed plans cluster south of the river.
  3. If several districts still fit, use where to stay in Seoul to choose the base before comparing room rates.

Test difficult returns

Stress testRoute to checkEliminate the hotel when
Arrival with luggageThe route from the actual airport drop-off or station exit to the hotel doorReject a route your group cannot manage because of stairs, long passages, rough pavement or confusing turns
Return after shoppingThe likely shopping area to the hotel, including a bag drop and another outingReject a base that repeatedly adds a detour or transfer and leaves bags with you late
Rainy or late nightThe latest planned activity back to the hotel, including the final walk and nearby foodReject a final stretch that does not suit the group or leaves no workable missed-connection fallback
Distance alone is not enough. Exits, stairs, surface conditions and the people traveling with you decide whether a short walk is actually easy.

A direct airport train helps only if the station exit and walk to the hotel also work. In Myeongdong, compare the actual approach from Myeongdong Station, Euljiro 1-ga, Hoehyeon or the Namsan side; a district label cannot tell you which route suits your bags.

Check room and rate details

Check the room as carefully as the map. Large suitcases need floor space, friends should confirm separate beds, and families should verify occupancy and child rules instead of assuming a child does not count.

Noise matters even at a well-known hotel
If anyone in your group is noise-sensitive, check current information about street, corridor and air-conditioning noise. A busy nightlife area may not suit someone who needs an early night.
Check access before choosing the area
For older guests, strollers or sore knees, confirm lifts, step-free entry and bathroom access before booking.
Measure the usable floor area
The listed area does not show how much floor remains after beds, desks and fixed furniture are in place. Room photos can show luggage clearance and furniture placement that the area figure leaves out.

Match Seoul bases to your itinerary

Hongdae: arrival night
Helpful for a late arrival, early departure or repeated west-Seoul plans. If most nights end in Old Seoul, Dongdaemun or south of the river, daily return trips may outweigh the airport-rail gain.
Myeongdong: shopping afternoons and unscheduled hotel returns
Works for mixed-area days, groups that split up, or shopping plans with a hotel break. Treat Myeongdong as a central reset point; another area may shorten the trip when most stops cluster elsewhere.
Jongno: early old-Seoul mornings
Fits a schedule that returns to palaces, Bukchon and historic neighbourhoods, especially for early starts. Jongno covers several station areas, so check the exact stop and walk back after dark.
Gangnam: after south-Seoul events
Best for schedules with recurring concerts, Jamsil, Apgujeong plans or work meetings regularly finish south of the river. If three sightseeing days stay north of the river, one mall stop rarely justifies the added cross-city travel.

Compare final prices on equal terms

Compare the same dates, occupancy, bed type, breakfast, payment timing and cancellation deadline. Include taxes and currency so the total prices represent the same room and protection.

On a short visit, the time spent checking out, storing bags and checking in elsewhere can consume a useful part of the day. Use the one Seoul hotel or two bases test test before splitting the stay.

Use hotel examples after choosing an area

If palace and old-Seoul visits repeat, test AMID Hotel Seoul against those mornings, the required room and the departure route.

For central Seoul, compare what each base does for your regular returns: Lotte Hotel Seoul may suit repeated Myeongdong and Lotte-area plans, while The Westin Josun Seoul fits a different central-city pattern. If both remain viable, use Lotte Hotel Seoul vs Westin Josun Seoul to examine the trade-off.

When Dongdaemun is a regular stop, compare the job each hotel needs to do. Hotel Skypark Kingstown Dongdaemun can be tested for shopping returns and bag breaks; Novotel Ambassador Seoul Dongdaemun is another candidate when residence-style rooms or hotel facilities matter. Verify each room and route on the property page.

If Jamsil sets the trip’s location, compare the late return and the room you will use: Sofitel Ambassador Seoul, Delight Hotel Jamsil and Seoul Olympic Parktel are separate candidates, not interchangeable options. Check event-day access and current room details for each.

Use the Hongdae vs Myeongdong comparison if both areas fit. Put each shortlisted hotel beside the stops in the 5-day Seoul itinerary; the area with fewer long returns is the stronger base.

For the final two hotels, do not calculate a vague total score

For each finalist, complete the sentence: “I gain ___ and give up ___.” One may ease airport arrival but lengthen palace or south-Seoul trips; another may simplify shopping returns but require a less direct airport route.

Put the chosen address into every itinerary day. Check the first stop, final return and rainy-day alternative again before booking; the strongest candidate is the one whose difficult routes remain workable.
