Choose a base around the trips you will repeat. Jeju City often suits late arrivals, early flights and northern days; Seogwipo suits consecutive southern days. A coastal base needs enough nearby plans to justify the transfer.
Let arrival and departure set the first constraint
For an evening arrival, luggage, check-in and dinner already take time. Stay near the airport unless you have confirmed a practical transfer and late check-in elsewhere.
An early arrival alone does not make Seogwipo a better base. Check where the next full day starts and whether the south appears on more than one day.
Stay south when the route repeats there
Seogwipo fits when several days begin or end in the south, so dinner and the hotel return stay near the route. One attractive sea-view night is a weak reason to move the whole trip.
If the south is only one stop and other days point north, east or west, sleeping there can lengthen the return. Compare the number of evenings and mornings actually spent nearby before choosing.
Driving does not remove the distance
Driving makes more stops possible, but distance and fatigue remain. Group days by direction and pick a base that works for the following morning. If you are unsure whether to drive, start here: whether you actually need a rental car in Jeju
Without a car, transfers and luggage shape the base as much as restaurant choice. Reduce the number of regions if public transport makes island-wide trips impractical.
Choose an area that works on more than one day
Before booking, note how you will reach the hotel on arrival, where most mornings begin, where you expect to eat and how departure day connects to luggage and airport travel. Those routes narrow the area.

Use the evening return as a tie-breaker
For the first night after landing, Jeju City can avoid an extra drive on unfamiliar roads. After repeated southern days, Seogwipo may make the return to dinner and the hotel shorter.

A map midpoint may still add travel
A map midpoint does not make every coast nearby. Group the plan into north, east, west and south days, then let the most repeated direction guide the base.
If the trip is balanced across regions, prioritise easy arrival and departure. Moving hotels for one scenic day adds packing and check-in without necessarily saving travel.
Include driving fatigue in the plan
For a self-drive trip, include the driver’s evening fatigue in the decision. A hotel that avoids a demanding return after dinner may be more useful than a cheaper room that adds another night drive.
When the group prefers different starts or driving pace, choose the base that reduces the most difficult repeated leg. Keep the first stay simple if nobody agrees on a regional focus.
Match hotel changes to trip length
On a two- or three-night trip, moving hotels can consume useful time in checkout, luggage storage and waiting. Move only when the second base serves a real block of nearby plans.
With four or five nights, two bases may work if the middle days stay in a distinct region. Confirm the arrival and departure first; changing rooms remains optional.

Check the exact hotel after choosing an area
After choosing the area, compare the exact hotel address, parking or transfer, evening access and cancellation terms. Compare prices for the same dates, guests and room type.
Decide which trade-off suits the trip: a northern base can simplify airport logistics; a southern base can shorten repeated southern evenings while adding travel elsewhere.
Keep a nearby weather fallback
Keep a rainy-day plan in the hotel’s region. If poor weather arrives, local food, an indoor stop or an earlier night can make the base useful without crossing the island.
When the group is tired or conditions change, shorten the day and keep dinner near the hotel. A good base gives that adjustment a practical route.
