Four nights make a two-plus-two stay tempting, but the hotel change consumes part of the middle day. Check out, store bags, reach the next area, wait for the room and unpack. The split earns its place only if the second address removes a route you would otherwise repeat.
Give each hotel a real job
A Hongdae–Myeongdong split works when the first pair of nights serves west-Seoul plans and the last pair supports central visits, shopping or a useful afternoon return. Count the evenings and mornings each base will actually save, not just the number of places you want to sample.
Choose the areas first with Hongdae vs Myeongdong, then decide whether both should be overnight bases.
Make the transfer day deliberately light
Morning checkout and later check-in leave a gap. Use that day for the move between areas or a nearby meal; avoid combining it with a distant attraction, timed booking and late cross-city dinner.
If the new hotel cannot take you early, decide whether a flexible afternoon is acceptable. Otherwise, keep one address and visit both districts as day routes. Use one-hotel versus two-base test for the wider base decision and luggage-before-check-in route to map the bag handoff before assuming luggage storage makes the change easy.
Start in Hongdae when the first days stay west
Hongdae is a useful first base when arrival, the first dinner and the following day are concentrated around the northwest. For a late landing, plan the first night separately with late-arrival first-night guide.
If you sleep in Hongdae once but spend the next full day and evening in central Seoul, that first stop may not repay a second hotel move.
End in Myeongdong only when central plans continue
Myeongdong can serve central sightseeing, shopping and a room break before dinner. Once the area is settled, use the Seoul hotel guide to compare properties rather than choosing a hotel before the route.
A central label does not settle the decision. If the last two days centre on Seongsu, Gangnam or a venue elsewhere, compare that actual route first. A repeated Jamsil schedule belongs in the Jamsil concert-hotel comparison rather than a forced split.

One hotel leaves more room for changes
With one base, Hongdae and Myeongdong remain day trips and every night ends at the same address. That is easier to adjust around rain, a late start or a changed reservation because there is no check-in to fit into the day.
If your plans are still loose, the 5-day Seoul itinerary shows how a single base can keep a longer itinerary flexible.
More people make a second base harder to justify
Families and groups carry more bags and need to coordinate room access and rest. The new hotel should save enough shared travel to outweigh that extra handling.
For a family, see one-hotel versus two-base decision. For three adults, triple-room versus two-room guide focuses on room layout. Solo travellers handle every bag and check-in themselves, so count the saved evening or morning routes before splitting.
Compare the full stay, not just room totals
Use the same dates, occupancy and cancellation terms for both options. Add the transfer day, luggage handling and any extra transport. A higher room total may still make sense if it removes repeated journeys; a lower total may not if it creates them.
If the move involves a late arrival, check Seoul late check-in checklist before choosing a non-refundable rate.
Use Myeongdong for returns you will actually make
A central base may help when you expect to bring purchases back before going out again. If dinners and shopping are mostly in Hongdae, moving east may put the hotel on the wrong side of your routine.
Ask which afternoons call for a room break. If you only want to experience both neighbourhoods, compare the five-night split version; one extra night changes how much a move can pay back.

Let the new base serve the evening you move
After checking in, spend that evening in the new area. Returning straight to the first neighbourhood turns the second address into extra luggage work without a local benefit.
Keep the middle day light enough for the next base to become useful that night.
Let the departure route decide the last night
An early flight, late arrival or KTX departure can give one night a separate purpose. Do not add another move to a four-night stay unless it solves a distinct transport problem.
For the last night, compare Myeongdong vs Seoul Station for the final night. If Busan follows, use Seoul-to-Busan KTX guide to assess the station journey. When AREX and bags matter most, Seoul Station, Gongdeok and Hongdae compares the relevant bases without assuming Seoul Station is always best.
A quick decision
- Split Hongdae and Myeongdong when both bases serve repeated plans and the move day stays light.
- Choose one hotel when your days cross districts, the schedule may change or the second address adds little route savings.
- Wait to book the split if your flight, final night, room setup or luggage plan is still unsettled.
Choose the number of hotel addresses before comparing individual properties. In four nights, the second address should remove repeat travel rather than add variety by itself.
