How to Plan an Odongdo Coast Day in Yeosu

Odongdo is an easy-to-reach island walk with a 768-metre breakwater approach and forest paths beyond it. The island is free to enter; the Dongbaek Train is optional and has its own fare and seasonal timetable. Decide whether the group wants the walk, the ride or both before choosing a turnaround point.

Choose how to cross the breakwater

Walking from the entrance takes about 15 minutes each way. The Dongbaek Train covers 1.2 km between the island entrance and the stop beside the musical-fountain area. An adult one-way ride costs ₩1,000; the listed discount fare is ₩500 for visitors aged 65 and over, Yeosu residents, ages 7–19 and university students. The train stops for lunch from 12:00 to 13:00. Its hours change by season, with winter service shortened to 09:30–17:00; check the city’s current timetable and fare table before relying on a return ride.

Walking both ways leaves the timing in your hands. A train in one direction can save energy for the island paths, but check both the final outward and return departures first. If a service gap would leave too little time, keep the walk short and return on foot.

Use the forest and coast as the main visit

Yeosu describes Odongdo’s natural forest path as about 2.5 km. Choose a short loop if anyone has limited time or stamina; the lighthouse and more exposed coastal sections can remain optional. Wind, rain and wet leaves affect the footing, so keep to marked paths and skip rocks or barriers used for photographs.

Camellias are seasonal rather than guaranteed. Yeosu lists roughly 3,000 camellias, which may begin flowering in late November and reach peak bloom around March. See the city’s Odongdo guide for the seasonal overview. If flowers are the main reason for the trip, check recent local reports before travelling; the island still works as a coast-and-forest walk outside bloom season.

Complete Odongdo before adding a cable car, cruise or evening view. Each has a separate boarding point, queue and return. For an overnight, compare the first transfer from your base. Compare Yeosu stays.
