Choose the wall, Ihwa lanes or a short city view
Naksan Park links the Seoul City Wall, Ihwa-dong, Hyehwa and Dongdaemun, but they are not one effortless loop. Choose the part that matters: follow a section of wall for history, descend through public Ihwa lanes for neighbourhood detail, or take one viewpoint before dinner or a performance.
| Route | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Hyehwa to one wall viewpoint | A short history walk before a café, theatre or dinner | The climb still includes slopes or steps |
| Wall to Ihwa-dong | City-wall views and a slower neighbourhood visit | Use public lanes; residents live along the route |
| Naksan to Dongdaemun | A longer walk ending near markets and transit | Darkness, crowds and crossings lengthen the return |
| Short lookout only | Rain, children or limited walking time | Confirm an accessible viewpoint and turn back early |
Use the wall as a route, not a photo backdrop
The Naksan section of Hanyangdoseong runs between Hyehwamun and Heunginjimun and is described in the existing guide as roughly 2.1 kilometres. A short section is enough for a wall-and-city contrast; the full walk needs more time, footwear and daylight. Check current trail access, restoration work, lighting and surface conditions before leaving.
Ihwa-dong is residential. Keep voices low, do not block stairs or gates, and ask before photographing residents or homes. Murals and cafés can change; choose one public lane and a confirmed stop rather than searching through private stairways for a particular image.
Plan the finish around the group
Hyehwa suits a café, theatre or earlier dinner. Dongdaemun gives a busier city finish and more crossings. The park is listed as open around the clock, but an open gate does not guarantee lighting, safe footing or convenient transport at every hour. Sunset depends on cloud and season; leave while the planned descent still feels comfortable.
After rain, slopes and stone steps can be slippery. In summer, walk early or near sunset and carry water; in winter, cold wind and short daylight favour a brief outing. Strollers, wheelchairs and luggage need a specific accessible route check rather than a general “park” label. Choose one route segment and a nearby meal or station as the fallback.
For accommodation, Hyehwa supports theatre and a quieter start; Jongno or Dongdaemun can suit a wider wall-and-market itinerary. Compare the next day’s route, noise and the final walk before choosing a base.
