Jeongdongjin’s sunrise is a date-specific coastal outing. It lies south of central Gangneung, so plan around the first service you can actually catch, time at the shore and a confirmed way back.

Work back from sunrise to the train
Enter the visit date and Jeongdongjin in the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute sunrise calculator. It gives the astronomical sunrise time; cloud, haze and rain may still hide the horizon. Check the forecast and coastal warnings before setting out.
Jeongdongjin Beach is beside the station at 17 Jeongdongyeok-gil, according to the Korea Tourism beach listing. Use KORAIL to confirm both train legs for your date. A departure from central Gangneung or Seoul is not automatically early enough: stopping patterns and timetables vary.
Stay within public coastal areas
Choose a legally accessible section of beach, the public area beside the station or Sandglass Park. The station is an operating railway site; keep to marked public routes and outside restricted areas. Museum, rail-bike and resort access is separate, with its own operator and schedule.
Decide where to sleep and what comes next
A Jeongdongjin-area stay can shorten the first transfer. A central Gangneung base offers more options after sunrise but only works if the early ride is confirmed. Check the actual walk from the room rather than relying on a sea-view label. After dawn, leave room for breakfast or a rest before adding another stop; see a Gangneung day plan or compare its areas.
For New Year’s Day, use that year’s city notice for crowd controls and transport. Previous festival arrangements do not confirm current access.
