Taebaek Coal Heritage Day: Museum, Cheoram and a Separate Mountain Plan

Give the coal story its own main block. Taebaek Coal Museum and Cheoram Coal Mine History Town explain different parts of the region’s industrial history; a Taebaeksan hike is a separate outdoor commitment. Add the mountain only if it does not cut short the museum or leave the group rushing for transport.

Start at the Coal Museum

The museum is at 195 Cheonjedan-gil. Taebaek City lists opening hours of 09:00–18:00, last entry at 17:00, and closure every Monday. Individual admission is ₩2,000 for adults, ₩1,500 for teenagers or military visitors, and ₩1,000 for children. The museum FAQ directs drivers to the first park lot and notes an approximately 300 m uphill approach from the parking area.

Give the exhibits enough time to follow the mining process and its effects on daily life. If mobility is a concern, check the current elevator and access notices before travelling: the city posted a lift replacement notice for October through November 2026.

Cheoram is a lived-in town

Cheoram Coal Mine History Town preserves mining-era streets and buildings, including the raised “kachi-bal” structures beside the river. Taebaek tourism lists it as free, open 10:00–17:00, and closed on the first and third Mondays. The city lists the address as 404 Dongtaebaek-ro and gives the contact number 033-582-8070. Treat the street as a heritage neighbourhood: stay in public areas and do not photograph residents or enter private buildings.

Use the 2026 city tour if the route suits

Taebaek’s 2026 city-tour notice lists service from May 5 to December 31, between 10:00 and 18:00. Adult fare is ₩6,000, school students ₩3,000 and children aged seven or younger travel free. Advance booking closes at 14:00 on the day before; weekday departures and the Geumdaebong interpretation course require at least five participants. Attraction admissions and lunch are paid separately. Check the booked itinerary to confirm which stops fit your day.

Without the city tour, Taebaek’s route page lists a bus from the terminal to Danggol in about 25 minutes. From the museum stop, allow roughly a 600 m walk to the entrance; Cheoram uses a separate route. Check date-specific departures and returns before relying on either bus.

Keep the mountain optional

If you want Taebaeksan too, make it a second day or choose only a short, currently open route. The National Park Service posts trail access and control information; check it before leaving town. A mountain view is not a substitute for giving the coal museum and Cheoram enough time.
