For a relaxed Sokcho half-day, cross to Abai Village on the hand-pulled Gaetbae ferry, stop for a meal, then add a short Cheongcho Lake walk if daylight and energy remain.
Cross the water first, then decide how far to walk
The Gaetbae links Sokcho’s downtown side with Abai Village in Cheongho-dong. Passengers help pull the cable ferry across the water. A one-way fare is KRW 500 for adults and KRW 300 for elementary-school children. Posted hours are 05:00–23:00 from May to October and 05:30–22:30 from November to April; weather can change service. Check the ferry notice before relying on a late crossing. Check the operator’s hours and fares.
Walk the village lanes and choose a meal before moving to the lake. Make Cheongcho Lake an optional partial stroll rather than assuming the entire waterfront is a quick loop. The lake perimeter is about 5 km; Cheongchojeong Pavilion and its 75-metre bridge make a compact target if you only have time for one lakeside section. The lake area is open around the clock, but wind, rain and darkness change how comfortable the walk feels. See Cheongcho Lake details.
Keep the day flexible
In warm weather, take a shaded meal break before extending the exposed lakeside walk. In winter or rain, keep the ferry crossing and village meal as the main plan, then shorten or skip the lake. If sunset matters, leave time for the crossing and return instead of treating the ferry as an instant transfer.
Sokcho has separate express and intercity bus terminals. Check the terminal printed on your bus ticket before deciding where to leave luggage or start the route; the Sokcho City transport page lists the express terminal at 3994 Donghae-daero. If you are staying overnight, choose a base for the next morning’s transfer rather than for this route alone. Compare Sokcho stay options.
