Only five days for Seoul and Busan: visit both, or keep one city?

Five days can hold two cities. The real question is whether both still keep an evening that feels like travel after the KTX day is removed.

Count arrival, departure and the KTX transfer before assigning hotel nights. The train is only one part of the move: checkout, station access, bags and arrival at the next hotel also use the day. If the second city gets only a late arrival and an early departure, one city may leave more time to explore.

Count the transfer before choosing two cities

Put arrival, two full days, the transfer and departure on the calendar. Use flight times you can realistically make, rather than treating an early landing or late take-off as a guaranteed sightseeing day.

Compare the full door-to-door transfer: hotel to station, train time, luggage, bag storage and onward travel to the next hotel. The published KTX duration does not show how much of the day remains usable.

When one city gives you more usable time

Keep one city if the trip starts late, ends early or includes a fixed event in the middle. With only five days, those constraints can leave too little time for two separate city visits.

One-city Seoul allows the group to use the middle days for palaces, neighbourhoods, shopping and weather changes without moving hotels. One-city Busan can give west-side, east-side or beach areas their own days and evenings.

For families, older travellers and groups with large bags, a city change adds several coordinated steps on the same day. Check whether everyone is comfortable with that move before buying tickets.

Gamcheon Culture Village is one possible Busan stop; the KTX transfer still needs its own day.

When the second city earns its place

If you visit both cities, give the KTX day to the transfer and plan one useful evening after arrival. Remove distant stops that depend on a perfectly timed train, checkout and room access.

An open-jaw flight—arriving in one city and departing from the other—can make the split more practical by avoiding a return trip solely for the airport. Confirm flight and train schedules before fixing the sequence.

A fixed concert or event can justify using one city for a single night, but only if the next day’s departure and the remaining full day in the second city still work.

Compare the time each version leaves

One-city version: arrive, use Days 2–4 in the same base and depart from there. Keep one day flexible for weather or a nearby excursion.

Two-city version: arrive in City A, take one full day there, use Day 3 for checkout and KTX, take one full day in City B, then depart from City B. The transfer day is not a full sightseeing day.

If the transfer day includes a palace visit, Gamcheon and Haeundae, the schedule is trying to do too much. Drop a city or add nights rather than relying on a chain of perfect connections.

Choose by the time you will actually have

Choose what the five days should preserve: Seoul’s city variety, Busan’s coast and neighbourhoods, a fixed event, or fewer hotel moves. The familiar Seoul–Busan route is not automatically the right fit.

Before comparing hotels, settle the entry city, exit city, KTX day, final night and city order. Those choices determine how many useful hours remain in each base.

Use this five-day test

  • Choose one city if arrival or departure cuts into the trip, a fixed event occupies a middle day, luggage makes a move difficult, or fewer than two full days remain after the transfer.
  • Visit both only if each city still has one full day and a useful evening, and the KTX day is reserved for travel.
  • Wait to book if the entry city, exit city or final hotel night is not settled.

Keep one city when arrival or departure timing, a fixed event, luggage or limited full days makes the move costly. Visit both only if each keeps a useful evening and one full day, with the KTX day reserved for travel.
