A KORAIL Pass saves money only on eligible journeys that fall within its valid days. Confirm eligibility and coverage, then compare its price with single tickets for the routes you will actually take.
Check who can use the pass and what it covers
The current KORAIL English guide lists 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-day select passes at KRW 131,000, 186,000, 234,000 and 275,000 per adult; child prices are KRW 66,000, 93,000, 117,000 and 138,000. Select days fall within the ten-day period from the pass start. Adults are 13 or older; children are 6–12, and one child under 6 may travel free with each adult. The pass is for eligible foreign visitors. SRT and metropolitan subway are excluded; check official terms for all covered services.
The pass is a rail product with defined eligibility and service rules, not a general transport card.
Count qualifying travel days, not city names
List qualifying intercity journeys by date. A select-pass day with only a short trip may cost more than the single fare it replaces.
Count the trains you expect to board, not the number of cities on the itinerary.
Plan hotel nights separately from pass days
Choose a pass day when it supports a move or return you already planned. Hotel nights can stay in one base even when you take a day trip by train.
Book accommodation around the places you want to visit; do not add a hotel change merely to use a pass day.
Compare the pass with your actual KTX fares
Price the exact train, departure and class as an individual ticket. Two or three long KTX journeys alone do not establish that a pass is cheaper.
Include the journeys already in your plan and compare their combined fares. Do not add hypothetical trips just to make the pass appear worthwhile.
Price the complete Seoul–Busan itinerary
A Seoul–Busan return is only one part of the calculation if you also plan other intercity trips. Compare the full sequence for your dates.
Finish the route list before purchase; the pass comparison depends on the journeys and dates you actually choose.
Keep local transport and SRT outside the calculation
SRT, city subway, buses and airport transfers have separate fares. Keep them outside the KORAIL Pass total unless the current product terms explicitly include the service.
This separates intercity rail from the local transport costs that remain after a pass purchase.
Compare each traveller’s own journeys
If companions take different routes or travel on different dates, calculate their eligible trips separately.
A shared holiday does not require every traveller to use the same ticket type.
Check seat reservations before relying on a saving
KORAIL says seat reservations open one month before departure, with up to two reservations per person per day. If reserved seats sell out, pass holders may travel standing; first-class reservations cost an extra 50% of the applicable first-class fare. Check current availability for any fixed-time connection.
Keep an individual-ticket alternative when a specific departure is essential and a seat is not secured.
When separate tickets are the better fit
Separate tickets are usually easier to compare when there are few qualifying rail legs, dates may change, or SRT and local transport make up much of the journey.
The flexibility to choose the exact departure can matter more than a possible pass saving.
When a KORAIL Pass is worth comparing
Compare a pass when several eligible KORAIL journeys fit its select days, the itinerary is settled and reservation conditions suit the group.
Treat the pass as one option in the fare comparison, not as the default winner.
