If time is tight, decide whether the gatehouse display or the river view matters more. The bridge and exhibition have different opening hours; check the city’s current notice before setting the walking route.

Woljeonggyo is a reconstructed Silla-era bridge on the Namcheon stream. The bridge is listed open from 09:00 to 22:00; the gatehouse exhibition opens at 10:00. Admission and public parking are free according to the current tourism listing. Check city notices before setting a late visit.

The covered bridge and the lower river stones are separate walking surfaces; use the bridge if the stones are wet or unsafe.

Allow for the two opening windows

The listed bridge hours are 09:00–22:00, while the gatehouse exhibition is listed 10:00–22:00. Entry is free. These hours do not promise a fixed light switch-on time or clear reflections, which depend on weather and water conditions. Check the Korea Tourism Organization listing and Gyeongju City information near your visit.

What the present bridge represents

The Samguk Sagi records a bridge in this area in 760 CE, linking the Wolseong palace area toward Namsan. The visible timber bridge is a modern reconstruction informed by archaeological remains; work was completed in stages from 2008 to 2018. It is not an untouched surviving Silla structure.

In daylight, the covered structure and river crossing are easier to read; the stepping stones can be skipped when conditions are poor.

Fit it into the old-town walk

Gyeongju City estimates about 1 km and 15 minutes on foot from Gyelim to the bridge, and about 2.7 km and 30 minutes from Donggung and Wolji. Those are route estimates, not visit times. The bridge sits alongside Gyochon, Gyelim and the central historic area; Donggung and Wolji adds a longer leg.

For a short stop, walk from Gyelim, cross the bridge and return along the stream. For a slower visit, add the gatehouse exhibition, then continue to one nearby historic site. Leave enough time for dinner and the return connection instead of treating the 22:00 closing as a transport plan.

Pick a visit window that fits your walk

  • About 30 minutes: cross the bridge, pause by the stream and return the same way.
  • About 60 minutes: include the gatehouse exhibition if it is open and allow an unhurried river stop.
  • About 90 minutes: walk in from Gyelim or another nearby heritage stop, visit the bridge and leave time for the return leg. City walking estimates do not include time inside attractions.

Choose the crossing for the conditions

The raised covered bridge is the safer option when rain makes stones slick. Keep children close near the water, avoid climbing on bridge elements and do not use the low crossing if it is flooded or closed. Wheelchair access, surface and crowd conditions should be checked on site before committing to the route.
